Valentines Day

The month of love. The month of heart break. From the famous words of ‘A Tale of Two Cities’ by Charles Dickens; “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times”. Valentines day encompasses two kinds of people. Those who have, and those who have not. Those who are caught in the fiery escapades of love, not hoping to return, and those who remain silent. Unfortunately this year I keep my peace.

Am I jealous? Yes and No. You cannot be with anyone properly if you cannot at least be alone with yourself. Of course I wish to have that day with me and a significant other, running the streets on a token of love and gratitude. Repeatedly finding excuses to let the other know that they are, at least in this moment and time, important to me. Valentines day is the X-mas for the believers in love.

But I am nonetheless a scrooge. For Valentines day is an excuse to show off a love, that if it were not for a pre-marketed holiday, should be shown more regularly. Maybe that is just the Leo in me talking, expressing his views on romance and the ideals of passion. But nobody wants to be left out right? Nobody wants to wake up on Christmas day and not expect a gift? But that is life. Sometimes it just happens that way. Those who hope for perfection, fail to find it. Valentines day is the only day where you pay to say I love you. Where guys look upon in fear of grabbing the wrong gift, where woman hope that he grabbed the right one.

If Valentines day provides any lesson or moral to its own story, it should be that we should remain content in love. That we look upon our dates, girlfriends, and wives, and that we understand that the day, if anything, commemorates the idea that the mere purpose of love and infatuation has brought you both together. That we have loved in the past, and hope to continue even more so in the future.

I have loved and I have lost, and I regret neither of the two. But I desire just the same, to love. To love in hope, and in promise. I may seem a little old fashioned, but tomorrow comes faster than most people think, and I rather not play a game that I know kills.

Adieu & Adieu
